Tents & Capacity Above & Beyond

How many people fit under a tent?

Why capacity planning matters

Choosing the right tent size is about more than just surface area. Comfort, safety and flow all depend on how many people you plan to host and how the space will be used.

A tent that is too small quickly feels crowded, while an oversized tent can feel empty and inefficient. By calculating capacity correctly, you create a pleasant atmosphere and avoid last-minute surprises.

Start with the type of setup

The number of people that fit under a tent depends entirely on the layout. Standing receptions, seated dinners or ceremonies all require different amounts of space per person.

Before choosing a tent size, always define how your guests will use the space: standing, seated, dancing or a combination of several zones.

Standing receptions and walking dinners

For a standing reception, walking dinner or event with cocktail tables, you can calculate approximately 1 m² per person.

If the event is very crowded (festival-style), you can go slightly lower. For more comfort and circulation, it is recommended to allow extra space.

Ceremonies and chair-only setups

When guests are seated in rows, such as during a ceremony or presentation, the required space per person is lower.

In this case, you can calculate around 0.65 m² per person.

Seated dinners, cabaret and meeting setups

If your guests are mainly seated at tables, the space requirement increases. For classic table setups, allow between 1.5 and 2 m² per person.

Cabaret-style or classroom setups usually require 1 to 1.5 m² per person.

How to calculate your tent size

If you know the number of guests, multiply it by the required square meters per person.

If you know the tent size, divide the total surface by the same factors to determine capacity.

Conclusion: the right tent size makes all the difference

The right tent size depends on layout, comfort and circulation — not just guest count.
