Fabric choice

Choose your fabric

Three of our fabrics can be made to measure: polyester, acrylic and HDPE. Olefin and coconut fibre are only available in standard sizes.

Start with the question of whether the sail needs to be waterproof or breathable. Waterproof polyester or acrylic keeps a shower off, but needs a slope so the water can run away. Breathable HDPE lets warm air through and stays cooler underneath, but it does not keep the rain out.

Once that is settled, the surface you want to cover and the colourfastness decide the rest. Below you will find what each fabric can handle.

Polyester

WeatherMax polyester is the strongest choice for made-to-measure work. It is waterproof, keeps its colour longer than any of our other fabrics and allows the largest surfaces. Choose polyester when you want to cover a generous area and the sail still has to look good after ten seasons.

Acrylic

Sunbrella® acrylic is woven rather than coated, which gives the sail a soft, textile look. Waterproof and colourfast, with a wide colour palette. Choose acrylic when the sail hangs above a terrace or dining area and the look matters as much as the function.

HDPE

HDPE is the only breathable fabric we make to measure. Warm air escapes through the weave instead of building up underneath. Choose HDPE above a playground, a seating area or a schoolyard, where heat is the problem and rain is not. It keeps the sun off, but not the water.

Step by step

From idea to sail in five steps

Step 1

Find your fixing points

Look at what the sail can hang from: a facade, an existing pole, a carport or a tree. Where there is nothing, add a pole. Measure the distances and note the height of each point.

Step 2

Choose your fabric

Waterproof polyester or acrylic if rain has to be kept off, breathable HDPE if heat is the problem. The maximum surface differs per fabric: 49 m², 35 m² and 48 m².

Step 3

Send your sketch or photos

A hand-drawn sketch with the dimensions on it is enough. We do the maths: 35 cm per corner goes to tensioning, and a waterproof sail gets 25 cm of slope per running metre. See also our size guide.

Step 4

You receive a quote

With the final dimensions, the chosen fabric and, if you want, the matching poles and anchoring. Expect around € 90 per m² (excl. VAT) for the sail itself.

Step 5

We make and deliver

Your sail is cut and sewn in our own production in Mouscron, Belgium. Expect 5 to 15 working days; in peak season this can run to two or three weeks.

Applications

Where will your sail hang?

The location decides which fabric you choose and how the sail is tensioned. These are the situations we make to measure for most often.

Terrace and dining area

Above a dining table you want to stay seated when it rains. Choose waterproof polyester or acrylic, with the slope running away from the facade.

Garden and play area

Above a sandpit, a lounge corner or a playground, heat is what counts. Breathable HDPE lets the warm air through and stays cooler underneath.

Carport and driveway

A sail above the driveway keeps sun, falling leaves and bird droppings off your car. Tension it between the facade and two poles, with enough height to drive underneath.

Hospitality and business terraces

Larger spans, often with several sails side by side. Multiple corners can meet on one pole with a multi-connection.

What does a made-to-measure shade sail cost?

On average around € 90 per m² (excl. VAT). That is the price for the sail itself; poles and anchoring come on top. The final price depends on the surface, the number of corners and the complexity of the shape.

What is the advantage of a sail made to measure?

A made-to-measure sail is worked out entirely around your space, which gives a perfect fit and even tension. Unlike a standard size, it takes account of your layout, of existing walls or poles and of the zone you want in the shade. That means better performance and a cleaner result.

Which fabrics can I order made to measure?

Polyester (waterproof, up to 49 m²), acrylic (waterproof, up to 35 m²) and HDPE (breathable, up to 48 m²). Olefin and coconut fibre are only made in standard sizes.

How do I work out the dimensions?

Start by fixing your anchoring points: walls, poles or existing structures. Then decide the shape and the height differences, because a waterproof sail needs a slope of 25 cm per running metre. Leave at least 35 cm between each corner and its fixing point for tensioning. A sketch or a few photos are enough to start; we check the final dimensions. How long does production take?

Usually 5 to 15 working days, depending on the complexity of the design and the time of year. Production itself can be done within 5 working days; in peak season it can run to two or three weeks.

Is the anchoring included?

No. Because every situation is different, you choose the poles and fixings separately. That way you get exactly what suits your surface: aluminium poles of 2, 3 or 4 metres, wall plates for concrete or solid brick, or ground fixings such as ground screws and a ground plate with concrete weight.

Having a shade sail made to measure

A made-to-measure shade sail is cut to the dimensions of your outdoor space, rather than the other way round. That is the difference with a standard sail: you do not have to settle for a 5x5 m square above a terrace that is 5.4 m wide, and you do not have to leave a corner unshaded because the shape does not match. We start from your fixing points — a facade, an existing pole, a carport — and cut the sail to suit.

Everything happens in our own production in Mouscron, Belgium, from the calculation to the last stitch. That also lets us make irregular shapes: five-sided sails, sails with a diagonal edge, or sails that follow an existing structure.

When do you need made to measure?

Not always. Our standard range covers triangles from 3x3x3 m up to 7x7x7 m and squares and rectangles from 3x3 m up to 6x6 m. If one of those fits within your span, a standard sail is quicker and cheaper.

Made to measure becomes interesting as soon as the distance between your fixing points falls just outside those sizes, when your space is not rectangular, when more than four corners are needed, or when several sails have to overlap above one terrace.

Measuring up yourself

Measure the distances between your fixing points and note the height of each one. Leave 35 cm per corner for tensioning: that is the room the tensioning system needs. A waterproof sail also gets a slope of 25 cm per running metre, from the highest to the lowest point, so rainwater always runs off to one side. Which fabric do you choose?

Three fabrics can be made to measure: polyester, acrylic and HDPE. Polyester at 270 g/m² is waterproof, scores 8/8 for colourfastness and goes up to 49 m². Acrylic at 260 g/m² is equally waterproof, looks softer and woven, and goes up to 35 m². HDPE at 340 g/m² is breathable, does not stop rain but stays noticeably cooler underneath, and goes up to 48 m².

What is not included is the anchoring. You choose that separately, depending on your surface: aluminium poles of 2, 3 or 4 metres, or wall plates and ground fixings for concrete, solid brick, soil or a terrace.

Keeping your sail in shape

Clean the sail once a year with water, mild soap and a soft brush, and more often if it hangs under trees. Do not use a pressure washer or aggressive products, as these damage the coating. Re-impregnate after every cleaning and let the sail dry completely before you store it. With that care and the right tension, a made-to-measure sail lasts ten years or longer.
