Buying a breathable shade sail: our tips and advice

When buying a breathable shade sail that needs to withstand the Belgian weather and climate, there are important factors to consider to ensure you choose the right type.

Below you'll find our most important tips and points of attention:

1. Material and fabric quality

Our breathable shade sail is crafted from premium HDPE yarn — lightweight (340 g/m²) yet mechanically extremely strong with a high tensile strength. The high elasticity ensures the sail can handle high wind speeds and absorb heavy wind loads with ease.

  • HDPE (340 g/m²) — lightweight, extremely strong and wind-permeable. Ideal for intensive and permanent use.
  • High elasticity — absorbs wind loads without stretching or tearing.
  • Fully custom made — adaptable to any specific situation.

The sail complies with the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — tested for chemical safety and completely free of harmful substances.

2. Finishing of the sail

The corners bear the highest tensile load — this is where wind load and tensioning mechanism come together. Our sails are reinforced in three ways:

  • Triple corner reinforcement — better force distribution, reduced point load and longer lifespan.
  • 316 stainless steel corner fittings with internal steel cable — corner to corner for maximum tension and stability.
  • Zigzag stitching with triple stitch — increased elasticity, tensile strength and durability.

The result is a sail that stays taut, even after prolonged exposure to wind — year after year.

3. Colour fastness

UV rays cause fading and brittleness over time. Colour fastness is expressed on a scale of 1 to 8, where 8 is the highest achievable score:

  • HDPE: 8/8 — maximum colour fastness
  • UV guarantee of 10 years

Our sails still look vibrant after years of intensive use.

4. Wind resistance

The great advantage of our breathable sails: they are wind-permeable. This makes them perform even better than waterproof sails in strong winds — the wind partially passes through the sail instead of pushing against it.

  • HDPE: up to 80 km/h
  • Ideal for coastal areas and windy locations
  • Better wind performance than a waterproof sail in strong winds

In severe weather, our sails can be removed quickly and easily —
without tools or external help.

5. Ease of use of the breathable shade sail

Thanks to smart tensioning systems, our sails are lightweight, easy to handle and quick to install and remove. In extreme weather, simply take down the sail — reinstall it later without any complicated steps.

  • Wall anchoring in stainless steel 316 — suitable for concrete and solid brick
  • Aluminium posts — developed in-house, with internal pulley system or external tensioning
  • Robinia wooden posts — for a natural look and feel

Maintenance & lifespan

Maintenance of the breathable shade sail

Less dirt build-up

The breathable structure results in less dirt build-up compared to a waterproof sail.

Water doesn't pool and air circulates — significantly reducing the risk of mould and algae.

Cleaning

One thorough clean per year — more frequently when positioned under trees.

Always use a soft brush and a low-pressure washer.

Avoid hard brushes, high-pressure washers or aggressive chemicals.

FAQ

The price of a breathable shade sail is around € 95 per m². This is the price of the sail itself, excluding posts, other anchoring options and installation.

No. Breathable shade sails do not block all UV rays — full UV protection is therefore not possible. You are in the shade and partially protected, but there is still a risk of sunburn at high temperatures and UV levels. It is strongly recommended to apply sunscreen when UV levels are high.

Absolutely — our breathable HDPE shade sails can be fully custom made. Thanks to our in-house production and expertise, we tailor the sail entirely to your specific requirements. Read all about custom shade sails here.

Delivery time is between 1 and 15 working days, depending on stock availability and whether it is a custom order. If the sail is in stock, it can be dispatched the next working day. Custom-made sails require a production time of approximately 15 working days.

The sail can be attached to a wall, to posts or a combination of both. Make sure to allow a slope of at least 20 to 25 cm per running metre (from the highest to the lowest point) to avoid water pockets and excessive tension on the sail. View our installation guide for full details.

A breathable shade sail is the perfect choice if you're looking for a light, airy and durable shading solution. You choose this option when you want a light and breathable shade, want to let light and air partially through, or need a sail that can withstand strong winds. Typical applications:

  • Garden, terrace, swimming pools and pool houses
  • Rooftop terraces
  • Hospitality, beach bars and events
  • Schools and playgrounds
  • Courtyards or patios
  • Coastal areas or windy locations

Our HDPE shade sail has been developed, calculated and tested by our own R&D team. It can withstand wind speeds of up to 80 km/h. In severe weather we recommend removing the sail. Thanks to our smart tensioning system, this can be done quickly — without tools or external help.

Various sizes, shapes and types

Shade sails are available in a range of standard sizes, shapes and configurations, tailored to your outdoor space. Possible shapes: triangular, rectangular or asymmetric. By playing with heights, angles and spans, you determine not only the shade but also the overall look.

A custom shade sail

A custom-made shade sail delivers the best result, both technically and visually. Custom work is ideal for terraces, large surfaces or combinations with walls and posts.

  • Shade sail fully tailored to your specific situation
  • Optimal positioning of the anchoring points

The advantages of a shade sail from Above & Beyond

Our shade sails stand out through their technical execution and level of finishing.

  • Produced in Belgium

Anchoring the shade sail

Depending on the situation, various fixing solutions are available.

Wall anchoring

The stainless steel wall anchoring is ideal when you want to attach a sail to a facade or wall. Made from stainless steel 316, suitable for concrete and solid brick via chemical anchoring or concrete screws. Clean, discreet appearance.

Please note: freestanding garden walls are not suitable due to wind load.

Keder wall anchoring

The keder wall anchoring is a unique system that creates a seamless and watertight transition between the sail and the facade — no gap, no rain ingress and a sleek aesthetic finish. This system is technically and visually unique on the market.

Aluminium posts

Our self-developed aluminium posts offer maximum flexibility and a modern appearance. Developed and produced in Belgium, with a characteristic angle of 80° or 90°.

  • Unique internal rope and pulley system
  • Sliding system for maximum flexibility
  • Fixed height for simple or permanent structures

Anchoring options: concrete with anchor plate, cast-in system, ballast block or ground screws for soft surfaces.

Wooden posts

Robinia wooden posts are an alternative for those who prefer a natural look. They fit perfectly in green or rural environments and can be technically adapted to the project.

What is a breathable shade sail used for?

A breathable shade sail is ideal for those looking for an airy shading solution without fully closing off the outdoor feel. Typical applications:

  • Garden, terrace, swimming pools and pool houses — cooling without sacrificing light and openness
  • Rooftop terraces — wind-resistant where parasols often fall short
  • Hospitality, beach bars, events — atmosphere, shade and strength in one
  • Schools and playgrounds — safe cooling in open environments
  • Courtyards or patios — where airy shade play is desired
  • Coastal areas or windy locations — where a solid sail catches too much wind

How do you clean a breathable shade sail?

A breathable shade sail is easy to maintain. Thanks to its breathable structure, there is already far less dirt build-up than with a waterproof sail — water doesn't pool and air circulates through the sail, significantly reducing the risk of mould and algae.

  • One thorough clean per year — more frequently when positioned under trees
  • Never use aggressive detergents that damage the coating
  • Avoid high-pressure washers
  • Always impregnate after cleaning for maximum water and dirt repellency
